Convert to BMP only when a specific legacy Windows application requires it. PNG is lossless, supports transparency, produces smaller files, and is universally supported — it is a better choice than BMP in virtually every scenario. Convert to BMP only when there is a specific software requirement.
Standard 24-bit BMP does not support transparency. Transparent areas in the ICO will be replaced with a white background in the BMP output.
Our converter extracts the largest available size from the ICO file (typically 256×256 pixels for modern ICO files) and outputs it as BMP. A 256×256 BMP at 24-bit colour is approximately 192 KB.
