Convert PNG images to WebP and get 25–35% smaller files while keeping lossless transparency. WebP is the ideal upgrade for websites — it replaces both PNG (for transparent graphics) and JPEG (for photos) with one modern format. All modern browsers support WebP, and the conversion happens entirely in your browser for complete privacy.

Yes. WebP supports full alpha transparency (just like PNG), so any transparent areas in your PNG — including semi-transparent pixels — are preserved in the WebP output. This makes WebP a drop-in replacement for PNG on websites.
Generally yes — lossless WebP compresses 25–34% better than PNG on average according to Google's benchmarks. Lossy WebP with transparency is even smaller, though with minor quality trade-offs. For web use, lossy WebP at quality 85%+ is usually the best choice.
Use PNG when: (1) you need to support software or systems that do not accept WebP, (2) you are delivering to Safari users on old iOS (iOS 13 or older, which predates Safari's WebP support), or (3) you need to edit the file in software that does not support WebP natively.
WordPress 5.8+ natively supports WebP uploads. Simply upload your WebP files via the media library. For automatic conversion of existing PNGs, plugins like Imagify, ShortPixel, or Smush can convert and serve WebP automatically with JPEG/PNG fallbacks.
In lossy mode, WebP applies light compression that is usually imperceptible at quality 85%+. In lossless mode (quality 100%), the output is pixel-for-pixel identical to the input. For logos and graphics with flat colours, lossless WebP is recommended.
