AVIF is a next-generation image format used by Netflix, Apple, and major streaming platforms for its outstanding compression. While modern Chrome and Firefox support it, many devices, apps, and editing tools still cannot open AVIF files. Convert AVIF to JPEG, PNG, or WebP to open and share your images universally.

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is based on the AV1 video codec and offers significantly better compression than JPEG, PNG, and even WebP. It supports HDR, wide colour gamut, and alpha transparency. Major platforms like Netflix, Cloudflare, and YouTube use it for thumbnails and imagery to reduce bandwidth.
Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, Opera, and Edge support AVIF. Safari added support in version 16. Internet Explorer does not support AVIF. If you need to share images with users on older browsers, convert to JPEG or WebP with a JPEG fallback.
Photoshop added AVIF support in version 23.2 (2022). Older versions require a third-party plugin. For maximum compatibility across editing tools, convert AVIF to PNG for a lossless working format, then export to your desired final format.
Generally yes — AVIF offers 20–30% better compression than WebP at the same quality level, plus HDR support and wider colour gamut. However, WebP has broader software support and faster encoding. For web delivery where encoding time matters, WebP remains the practical choice today.
Yes. AVIF supports full alpha transparency (like PNG and WebP). If your AVIF image has a transparent background and you want to preserve it, convert to PNG or WebP rather than JPEG, which does not support transparency.
