Convert GIF images to PNG for full-colour lossless output with proper transparency support. PNG is the ideal upgrade from GIF — it supports millions of colours instead of GIF's 256, and provides full alpha transparency instead of GIF's binary on/off transparency. Perfect for extracting clean still images from GIFs for use in design work.

Yes. GIF's single transparent colour is converted to PNG's full alpha transparency. In most cases, the transparent areas in your GIF will remain transparent in the PNG. Additionally, PNG can represent semi-transparent pixels, which GIF cannot.
Yes, always. PNG supports full 24-bit colour (millions of colours) vs GIF's 256-colour palette, lossless compression, and full alpha transparency. PNG is universally better than GIF for static images. The only remaining use case for GIF is animation, which PNG does not support (though WebP and APNG do).
For photographic or complex images, PNG will be larger because it stores all colour information losslessly. For simple graphics and flat-colour icons, PNG may actually be smaller than an equivalent GIF due to more efficient compression.
Our converter extracts the first frame and creates a static PNG. Animated PNG (APNG) is a separate format. For animated alternatives to GIF, consider converting to WebP animation or MP4 video using a dedicated tool.
WebP animation is 60–70% smaller than GIF with full colour support. MP4/WebM video is even better for longer animations. For static images previously saved as GIF, PNG or WebP are both significantly better choices.
